Poker is a kind of card game that involves gambling. Poker also refers to the single player video games played in casinos. Poker is actually derived from the French word ‘Poque’ and German word ‘Pochen’ which means ‘to knock.’ In the classic Poker, players put their stakes in a pot. The player with the highest value of cards or the player, who makes an uncalled bet, wins the pot.
The Past of Poker:
The card game Poker resembles the Persian Game ‘As Nas’ and the English game ‘Brag.’ Four players with a deck of 20 cards played Poker for the first time in 1829 in New Orleans. Gradually, the use of colored 52 -card English deck was introduced. Many variations of Poker like: draw poker, stud poker, lowball, split-pot poker and community card poker games entered the playing field during the American Civil War period.
Common phrases of the game like: ace in the hole, poker face, ace up your sleeve, blue chip, pass the buck, up the ante, when the chips are down, wild card, beats me etc also became indispensable parts of the conversation in England and America. Since 1970, a new trend of arranging Poker Tournaments started. Famous poker tournaments include the famous World Series of Poker and the World Poker Tour.
Rules of Poker:
The card game is generally played in a casino. In the initial deal, the dealer shuffles the card, a player cuts and a fixed number of cards are distributed to all the players simultaneously. All these players compete for a preliminary stake present in the pot.
In between the rounds, players get additional cards or they replace the already dealt cards and at the end of each round all bets are collected in the pot. During the betting round, if a player bets and rivals cannot match that bet, the deal gets ended at once. In this case, the bettor gets the pot without showing any cards. This situation is termed as Bluffing and it makes Poker different from other card games that involve gambling.
In the concluding round, if there is more than one player then they have to show their hidden cards. These cards are then evaluated and the player with the highest value gets the pot.
