From the pictures of ordinary beautiful women to the pictures of the President’s wife, from the caricatures of politicians to baseball players, artists can provide a wide variety of art work on simple and dull looking deck of playing cards.
For centuries, famous as well as amateur artists have earned their livelihood by designing the backs of playing cards. Simple hand drawn and painted pictures on the back of the playing cards have always been the favorites of all, till date. The work of few artists like William Aiken Walker, Maxfield Parrish, Kate Greenaway, Arthur Rackham and Norman Rockwell has sold for thousands of dollars as they created something different than usual.
Famous Designers and Their Cards
In 1864, during the American civil war William Alien Walker hand painted a pack of cards containing the pictures of famous politicians, generals or battle scenes. The pack was sold for $28,000.
Maxfield Parrish designed 10 packs of cards for a unit of General Electric and it sold for $6000. William Henry Barribal, an Englishman used to make the sketches of beautiful woman for playing cards posters and cigarette packs.
The famous French designer P. Emile Becat drew faces for 5 popular packs. It includes The Florentine Pack, St. Hubert’s Bridge, Can Can, The Three Musketeers and Casanova. Another French artist Eddy Muneral designed a caricature of then President Giscard D’Estaing’s wife. The pack was banned for sale. Spanish artist Arturo did a pack in1973 which contained 104 major political figures.
Museums and Art Galleries heritage These Cards
The Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York and The National Gallery of Art Washington, D.C., produce the duplicate sets of old artistic cards. The Museum Shop printed the famous “Art deck” containing 52 pictures done by great artists.
